lumineuse de l’Univers. Avant elle, l’opacité régnait sur tout. Un plasma brûlant composé de particules denses – photons, électrons et baryons – produisait une blancheur uniforme, semblable à celle d’un brouillard épais d’où les photons ne pouvaient s’échapper. Mais voilà qu’environ 380 000 ans après le Big Bang, l’expansion de l’Univers entraîne également son refroidissement. Cette baisse de la température permet la recombinaison dont naissent les atomes d’hydrogène. Les photons libérés circulent désormais de manière homogène. Ils vont dans toutes les directions sans émaner d’une source précise. Ils traversent le temps et l’espace et, encore aujourd’hui, ils nous entourent. C’est la première époque visible. Dans Rémanences, le fond diffus cosmologique sert de trame conceptuelle à une expérience de perception où la lumière constitue à la fois un sujet et un moyen. Après avoir exploré dans une série d’œuvres l’attrait des feux d’artifice, Florence Viau tourne maintenant son attention vers un rayonnement aussi mystérieux qu’ancien. Composé de micro-ondes, celui-ci échappe à l’œil nu, mais les instruments d’observation modernes révèlent sa présence immuable. Il hante chaque moment de notre existence, bien qu’il se soustraie la plupart du temps à notre conscience. Dans la salle d’exposition, des tours de télécommunication s’élancent vers le ciel. Au mur, un grand bas-relief ovale s’apparente à une carte, une planète ou une pierre dont les éclats suggèrent des traces fossilisées. Une gradation colorée inspirée de l’incandescence teinte l’atmosphère, allant d’un blanc chaud à la pénombre, en passant par un rouge orangé. Tous ces éléments évoquent différents modes de transmission des images. Ils constituent des tentatives diverses de rendre tangible leur présence autour de nous et en nous. Certains fonctionnent comme des leurres, d’autres comme des indices radieux à déchiffrer. Ils instaurent une tension subtile entre ce qui est là et ce qui ne l’est pas, entre ce qui se voit et ce qui reste imperceptible, entre les certitudes et les intuitions vagues. Le fond diffus cosmologique correspond au moment où l’Univers est devenu transparent. Dans le domaine de l’optique, la transparence qualifie la propriété de matériaux qui laissent passer la lumière sans entrave, tandis qu’au sens figuré, elle invoque la vérité et constitue l’une des valeurs cardinales de la modernité. Or, ici, rien ne s’offre clairement à la contemplation. Florence Viau porte son attention sur la construction de nos régimes de connaissances par le biais de l’image, en se penchant sur ses supports matériels qui en permettent l’émergence. Le point y apparaît comme une marque fondamentale, qu’il soit en creux, en relief, incandescent ou en suspens. Il nous informe du cheminement de nos observations portées vers le ciel et au-delà. C’est dans l’effort du Faire, dans le contact avec la matière, que l’empreinte devient un repère. Les œuvres, réalisées entre 2022 et aujourd’hui, convoquent de manière récurrente la notion de corps, tant comme outil de perception que comme vecteur de connaissance. Le rapport au corps devient central dans la réflexion sur la manière dont l’humain a cherché — et cherche encore — à assimiler, interpréter et symboliser les connaissances liées au firmament. L’exposition ratisse, à partir d’un commun mais à la fois pluriel nous, les sols du monde pour détecter ses immémorialités géographiques et géologiques. Constituée comme un laboratoire d’attention, la proposition réunit les travaux des artistes Molly Bertrand,&nbsp;Valérie Cain-Bourget,&nbsp;Laetitia De Coninck,&nbsp;Tina Lam,&nbsp;Pépite et Josèphe&nbsp;puis&nbsp;Florence Viau, et invite à une déambulation somatique comme psychique au cœur de l’espace de monstration devenu, par collages et assemblages, site (sur)naturel. C’est dans une volonté empreinte d’humilité de regarder les possibles (co)présences autour d’objets animés et inanimés que des récits s’énoncent, s’activent. À l’abri de trop grands gestes et dans une certaine économie de moyens, les artistes se contentent de l’exactitude de la matière. Et au milieu d’affects qui s’enchevêtrent, l’idée d’une géopoétique s’infiltre, permettant de sonder les structures du paysage par des détournements, des proximités, des confrontations. Comme une nouvelle manière d’atteindre l’autre, ici les pas parlent, les tranches de vie se veillent l’une l’autre. Car c’est dans la densité des strates qu’apparaissent les cycles et que se déplie l’échelle du temps.
